The other morning I went out to take a photo of my yellow day lilies blooming in the little circle under our big pine tree in the driveway. Here is the photo I went out to take.

But I saw this,

which of course led to more photos of the spider and its web.

I had actually caught it in the very act of spinning its web. In fact, it was just finishing the job up.

In this photo (and I’m not quite sure why) it looks like its spinning the web in space.

When he got done he just sat in the middle. Waiting. Like, well … a spider for some poor unwitting little bug to come along.

Still waiting.

Quite the thing of beauty in the morning sun.

Two mornings have passed since I took these photos and the web is still there. Looking maybe a little more tattered than the first day, but still in pretty good shape. And the spider? Still waiting.

And sat down beside her!  Well, technically I guess you sat down beside her.  Beautiful web and the spider is pretty interesting too.  Very cool!

Those are great! Very crisp! Were they with your recently found macro lens?

When I shoot with my macro I can’t get a depth-of-field that deep. Maybe I’m shooting more closely than you are.

Steve, thanks! I took about 40 photos or so and ended up with a handful that worked. No, I used my new 55-250mm zoom and it was mostly completely zoomed out. I tried with a closer lens and the spider kept freaking out. I can’t get much depth of field with my macro either. I was using the sports setting since the spider was in motion.

Wow - what amazing photos.  Arn’t spiders clever to build such beautiful webs.
