Calypso Bulbosa

Also known as “Fairy Slipper”, this is a fairly rare mountain wildflower that is an orchid. This photo was submitted by Fred Johnson. He took the photo near Red Feather Lakes, probably sometime in mid-Summer. We get quite a few of these on the cabin land down near the creek. Thanks for Fred for this great photo!

Blue Penstemon

Fred Johnson submitted this photo with the following comment:

“This photo of Blue Penstemon (Penstemon cyaneus) was taken at Sand Creek on May 28, 2005.  Craighead et al. say that ‘with its sky-blue corolla and purplish tube [it] is readily located in the sagebrush and along roadsides.’”

Arrowleaf Balsamroot

Photo submitted by Fred Johnson. He submitted the following text with the photo:

“This is an Arrowleaf Balsamroot.  I took the picture at Sand Creek on 5/27/5. ... There were lots of things to shoot from Friday to Sunday. Saturday was beautiful up there.”

I (Rick) cropped the top off the original photo to get the image of the flower larger within the constraints of my web page.

Baneberry (Actaea arguta)

Submitted by Fred Johnson with this comment:

I took this picture of baneberry (Actaea arguta) next to Sand Creek on August 1, [2005].  According to the books, making jam with the berry is not a good idea.

Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera)

Submitted by Fred Johnson with this comment:

I took this picture of red-osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera) next to Sand Creek on August 1, [2005].  Though I am told that the berries are edible I haven’t tried them.
