Also known as “Fairy Slipper”, this is a fairly rare mountain wildflower that is an orchid. This photo was submitted by Fred Johnson. He took the photo near Red Feather Lakes, probably sometime in mid-Summer. We get quite a few of these on the cabin land down near the creek. Thanks for Fred for this great photo!

“This photo of Blue Penstemon (Penstemon cyaneus) was taken at Sand Creek on May 28, 2005.  Craighead et al. say that ‘with its sky-blue corolla and purplish tube [it] is readily located in the sagebrush and along roadsides.’”

“I took this picture of Goldcup Potentilla at Boulder Ridge on 5/28/5.  Note that there is an orange spot at the base of each petal.  Note also that the leaves are arranged as the fingers on a hand. ”

“This is an Arrowleaf Balsamroot.  I took the picture at Sand Creek on 5/27/5. ... There were lots of things to shoot from Friday to Sunday. Saturday was beautiful up there.”

I took this picture of baneberry (Actaea arguta) next to Sand Creek on August 1, [2005].  According to the books, making jam with the berry is not a good idea.

I took this picture of red-osier dogwood (Cornus stolonifera) next to Sand Creek on August 1, [2005].  Though I am told that the berries are edible I haven’t tried them.
